Volunteering as a Generalist Adviser

Thank you for expressing an interest to volunteer with Citizens Advice Warrington.  As a new volunteer you will receive an introduction to the charity and specific training for the role along with ongoing support throughout your time with us.

Could a Generalist Adviser role be for you?

The team’s goal is to advise and support clients to take independent action.

What will you do as a volunteer adviser?

  • engage with clients through phone calls and face-to-face meetings to understand the problems they need help with.
  • research the client’s issues and provide clear information about their options.
  • document the client’s concerns and the actions you’ve taken to assist them.

Examples of what you might do:

  • help a client with debts set up an affordable repayment plan and contact the organisation they owe money to.
  • explore a client’s eligibility for benefits and assist them with completing a benefits application form.
  • provide guidance to a tenant having issues with their landlord by explaining their housing rights.

What abilities do you need?

  • be friendly and approachable

  • excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • be willing to learn about, and follow the Citizens Advice aims, principles and policies
  • have good IT skills

How much time should you commit?

This role carries a minimum commitment level of 2 full day’s per week, generally between the hours of 9.15 a.m. through to 2.00 p.m.
